The government’s economic plan and the budget statement for the year ending December 31, 2024, have been adopted by parliament.
On Thursday, December 7, 2023, following a successful headcount in Parliament, 138 members of the Majority cast votes in support of the budget, while 136 members of the Minority did not.
Speaker Bagbin said, “In light of this, this house has approved the budget statement and economic policy for 2024.”
Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin announced on Wednesday, November 29, that a voice vote would approve the budget in favor of the majority. However, the Minority Caucus overruled the decision and chose a headcount instead.
The Majority objected to the Minority’s challenge, claiming that the Speaker had already decided in their favor.
After some back-and-forth, the Majority finally consented to the headcount, but not before staging a walkout and accused the Speaker of holding up the process to let certain Minority MPs who weren’t in the chamber enter.
