The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in Ghana.
According to a press statement issued by WAEC on Friday night, the examination body has cancelled or withheld the results of 8,295 candidates following investigations into various cases of suspected examination malpractice and irregularities.
WAEC disclosed that the subject results of 7,434 candidates have been cancelled after the candidates were found to have brought foreign materials, including prepared notes, textbooks and other printed materials, into examination halls.
The Council also cancelled the entire results of 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones in the examination halls.
In addition, the subject results of 957 candidates have been withheld, while the entire results of 270 candidates have also been withheld over various suspected examination offences.
2026 WASSCE Candidate Statistics
A total of 512,862 candidates from 1,022 schools registered for the 2026 WASSCE across Ghana. The figure represents an 11.07% increase compared with the 461,736 candidates who registered for the 2025 examination.
The 2026 WASSCE candidates comprised 225,270 males and 287,592 females.
However, 5,049 candidates, representing 0.98%, were absent from the examination.
WASSCE Performance in Core Subjects
WAEC’s performance statistics indicate that candidates’ results in Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies fluctuated over the four-year period under review.
However, English Language recorded a progressive decline in performance during the same period.
The latest WASSCE results therefore provide important insights into the academic performance of senior high school students across Ghana.
WAEC Decision on Examination Malpractice Cases
Following investigations into examination irregularities recorded during the 2026 WASSCE, the 42nd Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee, held on Friday, August 7, 2026, approved several sanctions.
These included:
- Cancellation of subject results for 7,434 candidates who brought foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks and printed materials into examination halls.
- Cancellation of the entire results of 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones in examination halls.
- Withholding of subject results for 957 candidates over various suspected offences.
- Withholding of the entire results of 270 candidates for suspected examination irregularities.
WAEC Withholds Results of Candidates From 169 Schools
WAEC further disclosed that some subject results involving candidates from 169 schools remain withheld over allegations of collusion during the examination.
The cases are still under investigation, and WAEC says the withheld results could either be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations.
The Council is expected to make a final decision on the affected results by October 30, 2026.
