Twenty-two people have sustained injuries following a road accident at Sege after a Sprinter bus suffered a tyre burst and overturned on Friday, October 9, 2026.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., prompting a response from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and residents who rushed to the scene to assist the victims.

According to an eyewitness, Evans Doetse Huago, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Sprinter bus, with registration number GW 569-26, was travelling from Aflao towards Accra when its left rear tyre suddenly burst.

The tyre failure reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus subsequently veered off the road and overturned, leaving 22 occupants injured, including the driver.

Injured Passengers Rushed to Sege Polyclinic

Mr Huago disclosed that the injured passengers were transported to the Sege Polyclinic for medical attention with assistance from police officers and fire service personnel who responded to the accident.

Emergency responders and residents worked together to help the victims and manage the situation at the accident scene.

The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns and the importance of ensuring that commercial vehicles are properly maintained before undertaking long-distance journeys.

Overloaded Sprinter Bus Raises Safety Concerns

The eyewitness also raised concerns about the condition and loading of the vehicle, explaining that the Sprinter bus was heavily loaded with goods packed in both the boot and on the roof.

The additional cargo raised questions about the pressure placed on the vehicle’s tyres and whether the load may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the accident. However, the precise cause of the tyre burst has not been independently established.

Mr Huago further recounted that a welder operating near the accident scene quickly mobilised a tipper truck to help transport the goods to safety.

Meanwhile, the police made arrangements for the damaged Sprinter bus to be removed from the scene.

The Sege road accident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular vehicle inspections, proper tyre maintenance and compliance with safe loading requirements to reduce road traffic accidents in Ghana.

Motorists and commercial transport operators are encouraged to check tyre conditions, avoid overloading vehicles and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
