Five people have been declared deceased, with five more in serious condition, following an attack suspected of being related to armed robbery.
According to police reports, the attack took place on Friday, March 6, and featured the killing of a local guy by people suspected of being Fulani in an armed robbery incident.
In retaliation, the locals killed four Fulani herders and severely injured five others.
The injured are currently being treated at the Wa and Sawla government hospitals. Sawla police have already begun an investigation into the situation.
After an urgent meeting in Damongo, representatives of the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) travelled to Gbenyiri and other impacted towns on Saturday, March 7, in an effort to restore peace.
Salisu Bi-Awurbi, the regional minister for Savannah, has called the incident “unjustifiable, terrible, and unacceptable.”
“We will make sure that anyone linked to this crime will be arrested and prosecuted,” he declared.
Since then, the area has seen a return to some degree of relative calm.
