The evacuated people landed at Kotoka International Airport yesterday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the Ambassador of Ghana to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union Commission (AU), Ambassador Amma A. Twum-Amoah, other Ministry officials, and some members of the Ghana Psychological Association welcomed them upon their arrival from Sudan.

Six more Ghanaians, including two football players and four engineers, have reportedly been evacuated across the Wadi Halfa border crossing into Egypt, raising the total number of Ghanaian nationals who have successfully left Sudan to eighty (80).

The statement thanked all parties involved for helping to make the evacuation exercise successful and advised all Ghanaians who might still be in Sudan and want to be taken to safety to get in touch with the officials for help.

The Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a murderous confrontation in the country for the past week that has resulted in preventable deaths and compelled numerous nations to evacuate their citizens.

Since long-simmering tension between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into conflict on April 15, hundreds have died and thousands have been injured.

The RSF stated that the decision was made “in response to international, regional, and local calls” and that both parties had agreed to prolong the frequently broken humanitarian truce for an additional 72 hours.

The army stated that it hoped the so-called “rebels” would comply by the agreement but that it thought they meant to continue attacking. The sounds of artillery, airstrikes, and anti-aircraft fire could be heard early on Monday in Khartoum, the capital city.
