A new program proposed by President John Mahama would mandate the establishment of livestock and poultry farms in senior high schools across the country.

Speaking at Ghana Senior High School’s (Ghanasco) 65th anniversary, which he and the First Lady attended as students, President Mahama stated that the program will assist schools in producing their own meat rather than relying on the market.

He claims that one of the first schools chosen for the rollout will be Ghanasco.

He said, “We are coming up with a policy where secondary schools will have both a poultry farm and a livestock farm, this will ensure you don’t have to go to the market to buy meat. You will produce it yourselves, and the headmaster will have no excuse when the dining hall food has no meat.”

In addition to providing students with hands-on agricultural instruction and ensuring a steady supply of fresh meat, the initiative seeks to increase self-sufficiency in schools.
