Five Chinese illegal miners are arrested after NAIMOS raids illegal mining sites near the Birim River.

A team from the National Anti Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) began conducting a series of raids on illicit mining sites at Akyem Oda in the Birim central municipality on Monday, December 29, at approximately 1340 hours.

Five (5) Chinese illegal miners who were actively mining and washing into the Birim River were apprehended as a result of the raids.

There were two immobilised excavators at the location.

The squad confiscated a Toyota Land cruiser and a Toyota Hillux truck that the detained Chinese illegal miners had been using.

Along with several water pumping machinery and other mining equipment, a number of temporary buildings built at the locations were destroyed.

In order to stop additional pollution throughout the holiday season, NAIMOS keeps up its crackdown near significant water bodies.
