President John Mahama is apparently planning to award a special contract to Yvonne Afriyie Opare, CEO of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), till June 2029.

The GACL Board, led by Hon. James Agalga, is claimed to be aware of the development and is anticipated to hold a board meeting to ratify the special contract if the letter reaches them.

Readers of MyNewsGh.com may recall our story on December 21, 2023, when then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo selected Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare as the new MD of Airport.

She was appointed to succeed Pamela Djamson-Tettey, who served as GACL MD from February 2022 until her retirement at the age of 60.

Many anticipated that President Mahama would designate her successor following the NDC election, but insiders indicate that the president and some of his close relatives owe Yvonne Opare a favour and have decided to keep her.

Obuobia Darko was selected by the President to replace Yvonne Opare, however the former was apparently reassigned due to internal conflicts.

Chief Nixon Biney, a former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was allegedly nominated to succeed Yvonne Opare at one point, but he swiftly denied widely circulated rumours.

The Board, lead by James Agalga, is anticipated to promptly approve the president’s choice if he proceeds with his intentions, given the special contact afforded to the troubled GACL MD.

Yvonne Opare has since focused on her work for the year 2026.

This week, Yvonne and her board Chairman, along with senior management, toured GACL-operated regional airports to gain personal knowledge of their operations and ongoing development needs.

The journey began at Tamale International Airport, where the Board and Management met with staff and inspected important operational and technical sections of the airport.

The group then travelled to Bolgatanga to see the 4,362-acre property designated for the development of an airport in the Upper East Region.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Director General, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, members of the GCAA technical team, and Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga accompanied the GACL team at Bolgatanga.

The delegation interacted with local stakeholders during the visit and assured them of the government’s dedication to the project.

They stressed that H.E. the President’s promise to build an airport in the Upper East Region is fulfilled by the planned airport. The required technical specifications are now being finalised in order to guarantee a successful and seamless start of the project.
