Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, has denied allegations that the business is complicit in consumer data theft, amidst mounting public alarm about missing data bundles.

His statement comes as subscribers have been complaining more and more about their data being rapidly depleted and, in some cases, lost for no apparent reason.

Speaking about the matter on Friday, April 17, Blewett emphasised that MTN has no motivation to carry out such actions, emphasising that any attempt to falsify client information will eventually turn off customers and harm the company’s reputation.

Rather, he blamed the issue on changing patterns of data consumption, pointing out that the speed at which data is used is greatly influenced by the use of modern smartphones.

He claims that the growing demand for high-quality video streaming, automatic updates, and background activity from mobile applications are the main causes of rising data use.

He also encouraged people to be more proactive in controlling their data by monitoring app activity and altering settings like video quality to better control usage.

“There’s zero incentive for MTN to steal data from you. Because it will just chase people away. It’s not something we do; it’s not part of our values. So there’s a lot that we have to do as customers. We have to be very responsible.”
