Pressure is mounting on the Ghana Police Service to invite and investigate an Islamic cleric following controversial remarks in which he allegedly encouraged Muslims to kill individuals who disrespect or insult Prophet Mohammed.
The comments, contained in a widely circulated video, have triggered public concern and renewed discussions about religious tolerance, freedom of expression, public safety and Ghana’s peace and security.
The cleric was heard allegedly suggesting that killing a person who insulted Prophet Mohammed or described him as a false prophet would not constitute a sin and could earn the perpetrator a place in heaven, even if the individual was subsequently arrested.

National Chief Imam’s Spokesperson Calls for Investigation
The calls for police action have received support from Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam.
Speaking on a local television station, Sheikh Aremeyaw urged the police to invite and question the cleric, stressing that a subsequent apology should not automatically bring the matter to an end.
According to him, the alleged comments require proper investigation and should be assessed in accordance with Ghana’s laws.
He further stated that if investigations establish sufficient evidence of wrongdoing, the appropriate legal action should be taken.
Sheikh Aremeyaw said the issue has implications for national peace, religious harmony and public security, making it important for the authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the comments.
Social Media Users Demand Police Action
The controversy has also generated significant discussion on social media, with some users questioning why the police have previously taken action against individuals whose statements were considered capable of causing fear, panic or public disorder.
Social media user Marklee Nana Yeboah referenced previous cases involving politician Kennedy Agyapong, dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, rapper Medikal and social media personality Ebo Noah.
“Ghana Police, the ball is in your court,” he said, urging the authorities to take action.
Other social media users have similarly called for the cleric to be invited for questioning or investigated, particularly amid concerns that the remarks could contribute to religious tension and conflict.
Cleric Apologises Over Controversial Remarks
The controversy comes after the cleric reportedly issued an apology and expressed regret over the statements.
However, the apology has not ended demands for an official investigation.
Sheikh Aremeyaw maintained that the apology does not prevent the authorities from examining the matter and determining whether any laws were breached.

National Chief Imam’s Office Condemns Violence
Meanwhile, the Office of the National Chief Imam has condemned the cleric’s conduct and distanced Muslim leadership from any call for violence.
In a statement, the office stressed that violence cannot be justified as a response to religious disagreements, offensive comments or expressions considered disrespectful.
The office urged Muslims and members of other religious communities to rely on lawful and peaceful channels when addressing religious disputes.
The development has renewed calls for responsible religious leadership, peaceful coexistence and respect for Ghana’s legal system, particularly when sensitive issues involving religion, freedom of speech and public order arise.
Authorities are expected to determine whether the controversial remarks meet the legal threshold for incitement and whether further action is warranted.
