Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has officially opened the 2026 Micronutrient Forum 7th Global Conference, bringing together experts, policymakers, development partners and stakeholders from around the world to address micronutrient deficiencies and global nutrition challenges.
Ghana is hosting the international conference as part of efforts to strengthen global cooperation and promote practical solutions to malnutrition and other nutrition-related challenges.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President highlighted the importance of collective action in tackling malnutrition, which continues to affect communities across the world.
She noted that addressing malnutrition requires a coordinated approach involving key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, local government, research and the private sector.
Feed Ghana Programme to Support Food Security
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang said Ghana’s approach to improving nutrition recognises the strong link between food production, food security and public health.
She pointed to the Feed Ghana Programme, through which the government is working to increase domestic food production and develop a more resilient and self-sufficient food system.
According to her, strengthening local agricultural production can contribute to improved access to nutritious food while supporting Ghana’s broader food security and agricultural development objectives.
Free Primary Healthcare to Address Nutrition Challenges
The Vice President also highlighted the potential of the Free Primary Healthcare programme to improve nutrition outcomes across Ghana.
She said the initiative provides an opportunity to integrate nutrition more effectively into preventive healthcare by identifying nutritional risks at an early stage and addressing them before they develop into more serious health conditions.
The integration of nutrition services into primary healthcare, she noted, can strengthen efforts to improve public health and promote healthier communities.
Sustainable Financing Needed for Nutrition
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang further stressed the importance of sustainable financing and strong partnerships in addressing global nutrition challenges.
She noted that many countries are currently facing financial pressures alongside the impact of climate change and climate-related shocks, making sustainable investment in nutrition increasingly important.
She emphasised that nutrition policies and interventions must remain focused on the people and communities they are designed to support.
Ghana Hosts Global Nutrition Stakeholders
The Vice President commended the organisers, partners and participants for bringing together stakeholders for the Micronutrient Forum 7th Global Conference.
She expressed confidence that discussions at the conference would contribute to the development of practical, sustainable and people-centred solutions to malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
