The Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, Jürgen Heissel, has paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, to explore opportunities for stronger Ghana-Austria defence cooperation, knowledge transfer and military capacity building.
The meeting focused on emerging security challenges across West Africa and the Sahel region, with both sides highlighting the importance of coordinated regional and international efforts to promote peace and stability.
Ambassador Heissel commended Ghana for maintaining its democratic stability and reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and defence collaboration with Ghana.
Austria Supports Ghana Armed Forces
The Austrian Ambassador highlighted Austria’s ongoing support to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), including the provision of highly trained military working dogs by the Austrian Armed Forces.
The specially trained dogs are being used to help the Ghana Armed Forces respond to asymmetric security threats, strengthen border security, protect communities and safeguard critical national infrastructure.
Ambassador Heissel also indicated that Austria remains willing to facilitate deeper cooperation through relevant sister agencies to support the retooling and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Ghana Seeks Expanded Austrian Military Support
Welcoming the Austrian delegation, Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei expressed appreciation for Austria’s technical assistance and expertise in areas including defence management, cybersecurity and specialised canine handling.
The minister noted that modern security threats increasingly transcend national borders and require stronger multilateral cooperation and regional security partnerships.
He stressed the need for coordinated security efforts across Ghana’s maritime and land domains to effectively respond to evolving transnational threats.
Defence Ministry Pushes for Military Modernisation
To support the development of a modern and resilient military force, Minister Adjei called for expanded Austrian assistance in several strategic areas.
These include logistics support, military equipment modernisation, heavy machinery training and tactical exchange programmes between the two countries.
The Defence Minister also assured the Austrian delegation that his ministry would accelerate the necessary processes towards the signing and ratification of a formal defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and Austria.
The proposed cooperation is expected to strengthen military capacity building, defence technology, security training and operational readiness, while deepening bilateral relations between Ghana and Austria.
