The government is planning to construct new landfill sites in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions as part of efforts to address the increasing volume of waste generated across the country.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, said the expansion of waste-management infrastructure has become necessary due to growing pressure on existing disposal facilities.
Kpone Landfill to Be Decommissioned
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, 2026, Mahama Ayariga disclosed that the Kpone landfill site in the Greater Accra Region has reached its capacity and preparations are underway for its eventual decommissioning.
He explained that the government is working on plans to establish additional landfill facilities across Greater Accra and the Eastern Region to accommodate the rising volume of municipal waste.
According to the minister, the shortage of properly engineered landfill facilities in some parts of the country has contributed to the need to transport waste from areas such as Agbogbloshie to alternative disposal sites.
Government Explores Waste-to-Energy Solutions
Beyond the construction of new landfill sites, the government is also considering alternative approaches to waste management in Ghana, including incineration and waste-to-energy technology.
Mahama Ayariga said waste could be processed through controlled burning, with the resulting heat used to generate electricity.
He noted that discussions are already underway on how Ghana can adopt modern waste-management technologies as part of a long-term strategy to address the country’s growing waste-disposal challenges.
Ghana Seeks Sustainable Waste Management
The minister said the government’s broader waste-management strategy will focus on finding ways to turn waste into a useful resource rather than depending entirely on landfill disposal.
The proposed expansion of landfill infrastructure, combined with investment in waste-to-energy systems, incineration and other modern waste-management technologies, is expected to support more sustainable waste disposal in Ghana.
The initiative comes amid increasing concerns over waste generation, landfill capacity, environmental sanitation and waste management in Greater Accra and other regions.
