Today, September 13, 2023, the National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah, is scheduled to testify before the legislative special committee looking into a recording that allegedly features the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The committee has also requested that Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, return today.
They are welcome to participate in the committee’s ongoing investigations.
The event happened after the IGP and three senior police officers who were mentioned in the recording that was leaked appeared before the committee on Tuesday, September 12.
All witnesses must be accompanied by their legal counsel on Wednesday for the hearings to continue, according to an announcement made by the committee’s chairman Samuel Atta Akyea at the conclusion of the proceedings.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the inspector general of police, categorically denied taking part in a plot to surreptitiously record conversations with Bugri Naabu during the committee meeting on Tuesday.
The IGP vehemently denied claims that he was involved in secretly recording conversations involving the three implicated police officers—COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi—and Bugri Naabu in his address to the Parliamentary Committee looking into the audio on Tuesday, September 12.
Dr. Dampare made a point of emphasizing his dedication to obeying the law and maintaining the credibility of the Ghana Police Service.
He pledged to offer any information or support required to elucidate the circumstances around the recording leak, expressing his willingness to fully cooperate with the continuing investigation.
The implicated police officers are heard on the released recording arguing with Bugri Naabu about the necessity of removing the IGP from office because his continued tenure will make it difficult for the ruling New Patriotic Party to win the 2024 election.
