In the days before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 begins, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah made an outlandish prediction regarding the team’s chances.
Despite acknowledging that the four-time African champions are in a challenging group, Appiah thinks the Black Stars can advance to the round of 16 provided they remain focused and play each game as it comes.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, the former Juventus player alleged that even though the Black Stars understood it would be difficult given their group, they had not ruled out Ghana from the competition.
It will be challenging because we were the underdogs in 2006 when we traveled to Germany for the World Cup, Appiah tells Al Jazeera.
“We played against Italy, losing our opening match, and then defeated the second-ranked Czech Republic (2-0) and the fifth-ranked USA (1-0). We are able to accomplish that. Game after game must be endured.
“We play Portugal and aren’t worried about Uruguay,” Appiah continued. We pay close attention to the Portugal game and wait and watch. Our athletes are talented.
At Stadium 974 in Doha, Ghana’s campaign will get underway against Portugal on November 24.
