For the officers, men, and women of the Ghana Police Service, President Akufo-Addo officially opened the Kwabenya Police Barracks Project, yesterday Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
Speaking to the crowd at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo said that since taking office in 2017, the government has started a number of programs targeted at alleviating Ghana’s housing shortage, which presently numbers over two million units.
The President claimed that despite these steps, the increased urbanization nevertheless places a tremendous strain on our land resources and has resulted in the destruction of prime lands, particularly in metropolitan areas.

“For this reason, the government has launched an ambitious urban renewal program, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lands Commission, aimed at redeveloping prime areas in major cities all over the country, including the Kumasi Sector 18, Marine Drive Tourism Development Project, and the Takoradi Beach Road Redevelopment Scheme, among others,” he said.
“This facility, which I am commissioning today, is the result of one such urban revitalization effort, the Aviation City Reconstruction Project at the Airport enclave,” concluded President Akufo-Addo. These cutting-edge facilities have been built for our dedicated members of the Ghana Police Service through a public-private collaboration with Unique Development Company in order to make room for this reconstruction.

Five hundred and fourteen (514) one- and two-bedroom self-contained flats make up the facility, of which three hundred and twenty-two (322) are finished and ready for occupancy. These units, which come equipped with contemporary amenities, will provide police officers and their families with cozy living quarters and a favorable working atmosphere.
In addition to the housing, this project offers a clinic, a football field made of artificial turf, a tennis court, a standby generator, a police station, a fueling station, a workshop enclave, and other necessary amenities.

The construction of fifteen-bedroom self-contained apartments for the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the Ghana Airport Corporation Limited, and the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority is likewise far along, according to information I’ve received (DVLA). According to President Akufo-Addo, the realization of the Aviation City Project depends on the completion of these projects.
The developer, Unique Development Company Ltd, was praised by the president for working with the government to provide these facilities for the Police Service.
“This is undoubtedly a great start toward the revitalization of the Aviation City neighborhood, which will give our capital city a fresh new look. Let me reassure you that I am fully committed to seeing this project through to the Ghana we desire. I am convinced that we will realize our vision of a developed, progressive, and successful Ghana with God’s help and your support,” he continued.
