The Tarkwa Goldfields Mine in Ghana’s Western Region has hosted a benchmarking visit from a Zambian group as part of a study tour on mining operations and industry best practices.
A larger interaction with Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its affiliated organisations included the visit.
The goal of the delegation was to gain a deeper understanding of the organisation, rules, and environmental control of Ghana’s large-scale mining sector.
The team will be given a thorough presentation on the mine’s operations before going on a guided tour of important facilities, such as the power generation station and open-pit mining sites, said Mr. Kwame Appau, Relieving Manager of Tarkwa Gold Mine, who welcomed the visitors and expressed gratitude for the visit.
“You have come to one of the biggest operations you can have. We will take you through a presentation and then to the field, where you will get a bird’s eye view of the plant and the pit operations,” Mr. Appau said.
Brigadier General Chishala Mulenga, the head of Zambia’s delegation, clarified that the purpose of the visit was to supplement previous conversations with Ghanaian regulatory agencies.
“After visiting all the agencies under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, we thought that a site visit to the mine would give us a clearer picture of how large-scale mining is conducted in Ghana,” he said.
The crew aimed to understand the operational procedures, environmental impact, and lessons that may be learnt from Ghana’s experience, he continued.
The delegation saw how artisanal miners are influencing Ghana’s mining landscape by visiting Dagete Gold Mining Limited, a small-scale mining operation in the Tarkwa district, after touring the Tarkwa Goldfields Mine.
The Zambian team learnt a lot about Ghana’s integrated mining framework, which balances small-scale mining operations with large-scale industrial operations, and the significance of sustainable and ethical mining methods.
