A 30-year-old farmer, Emmanuel Kwofie, from Agona Nkwanta in Ghana’s Western Region, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife.

Kwofie appeared before the Agona Nkwanta District Court on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, following a viral social media video that showed him physically assaulting his wife.

He was charged with assault and pleaded guilty to the offence. The court subsequently convicted him based on his own plea and sentenced him to three months in prison with hard labour. The case was presided over by Mr. Kuma Selorm Dzata.

According to police investigations, Kwofie is married to Diana Mensah, a second-hand clothing dealer. The couple reportedly live together at Domeabra in the Agona Nkwanta Municipality.

Police investigations established that on October 8, 2026, Kwofie accused his wife of having an extra-marital affair before physically assaulting her. The incident was captured on video and later circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention to the case.

Following the incident, the police arrested Kwofie on October 12, 2026. He was subsequently arraigned before the Agona Nkwanta District Court on October 14, where he entered a guilty plea.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence, assault and the protection of victims of abuse in Ghana. Authorities continue to encourage victims and witnesses of domestic violence to report such incidents to the police and other appropriate support agencies.
