The Akwatia parliamentary seat was won by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a widely watched by-election.

The NDC’s candidate, attorney Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has won and taken the seat that the NPP had previously occupied.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC receives 18,199 votes to win the Akwatia by-election.

According to the results verified by the Electoral Commission, Bediako received 18,199 of the total number of valid votes cast. Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), his closest opponent, with 15,235 votes.

With 82 votes, Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) was far behind. 33,819 of the total votes cast were genuine, and 303 were not.

Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, passed away earlier this year, necessitating the by-election.

Both the NDC and the NPP made significant financial and human investments in the constituency during the fierce campaigning that preceded the election.

In Akwatia, voting was conducted yesterday, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 119 polling places.

Sorting and counting were carried out in front of party agents, security guards, and impartial observers after the polls officially closed at 5 p.m.

Following Bediako’s triumph, NDC supporters joyfully spilled onto the streets of Akwatia to sing and dance.

Political observers point out that the outcome is very important because Akwatia has a history of being a swing seat, with previous elections seeing it alternate between the NPP and the NDC.

Prior to the general elections in 2028, the governing party’s confidence is expected to be significantly bolstered by the NDC’s most recent victory.

As a result, Bernard Bediako gets elected as the next Member of Parliament for Akwatia. He pledges to carry on his predecessor’s work while furthering the government’s development goal in the area.
