The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun the installation of new public waste bins in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) as part of its efforts to improve sanitation and promote responsible waste disposal.

The action follows Duraplast’s donation of public garbage bins on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in support of the Assembly’s continued efforts to improve waste management infrastructure around the city.

The 20 bins were placed along the Kinbu to CMB section, which is a busy commercial area with a lot of people and cars and a significant rate of waste production.

Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, spoke during the installation activity and clarified that the bins were positioned strategically to serve roadside vendors, pedestrians, and traders who produce garbage during their regular activities.

He said that the Assembly will make sure that rubbish was regularly collected from the bins, meaning that trucks and sanitation staff would be sent out every day to empty them and keep the area clean.

The mayor warned locals not to bring trash from their houses to dispose of it in the public bins, emphasising that the bins were not meant for household waste disposal.

He issued a warning, threatening to arrest and prosecute anyone caught participating in such activities.

He urged the people to support the project by making responsible use of the bins, emphasising that cooperation and teamwork were necessary to keep the city clean.

Additionally, he took use of the occasion to urge business organisations to support the project.

The donation was part of Duraplast’s commitment to environmental sustainability and national development, according to Ms. Mireille Hitti, Executive Director, who made this statement earlier during the bins’ presentation.

She pointed out that Duraplast, a company that is proudly Ghanaian, felt that its obligations went beyond production to include supporting programs that encourage a better and cleaner environment.
