National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as General Mosquito, has decided not to seek re-election, sparking speculation about his possible bid for the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The development comes after nominations for the NDC’s national executive positions closed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. A total of 137 aspirants picked up nomination forms to contest various leadership positions within the opposition party.

According to sources cited by GraphicOnline, five candidates are expected to contest the national chairmanship position, which will become vacant following Asiedu Nketiah’s decision to step down after one term.

The aspirants are former Odododiodio Member of Parliament Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashietey, former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, National Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka, and former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu.

Nomination forms for Ofosu Ampofo were reportedly picked up by some party members as preparations for the national executive elections gathered momentum.

As the NDC leadership race intensifies, Asiedu Nketiah’s decision not to seek another term has raised questions about his political ambitions and future role in the party.

Although no flagbearership bid has been confirmed in the information provided, his decision has fuelled speculation that he could enter the contest to become the NDC’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The outcome of the party’s internal elections is expected to shape its leadership structure and influence preparations for the next presidential election.
