The public and, more especially, importers of used automobiles have been told by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) that, as of January 1, 2023, all used vehicles imported into Ghana must be accompanied by a current Certificate of Conformance (CoC) from an authorized authority.

According to the GSA, the certificate must show that the used car complies with GS 4510:2022, Road Vehicles — Requirements for Imported Used Motor Vehicles, which is the Ghana Standard for Used Cars.

This complies with the Customs (Amendment) Act 2020, the revised Section 61 of Act 891, and other relevant laws.

The GSA stated in a statement that the continued value chain of the used vehicle industry would be supported by the enforcement of this part of the law, which would increase the safety, quality, and asset value of used vehicles imported into Ghana.

A certified third-party inspection body or a skilled and authorized used car dealer can provide a certificate of conformance.

The Authority promised to post an updated list of authorized used vehicle dealerships and inspection agencies with contact information on its website.

The Authority reminded all new vehicle importers and assemblers to register with the Authority and make sure that imported or assembled vehicle models are homologated (certified) by the Authority in accordance with the applicable Ghana Standards for new vehicles of categories M1 (passenger cars and SUVs), M2 (minibuses), and N1 (Pickups and cargo vans).

Starting on January 1st 2023, new automobiles of models that have not been homologated (certified) by the Authority will not be allowed for import.

For any further information on vehicle standards, new vehicle distributor registration and used vehicle dealership licensing, importers can contact the GSA Auto Team via email at [email protected] or call their front desk (+233-302) 506991-5 / 500065/6
