Ghanaian driving and vehicle credentials will be more globally recognised and secure with the introduction of biometric international documents by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
In accordance with international norms and Ghana’s responsibilities under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of the United Nations, the upgrade aims to resolve long-standing issues faced by Ghanaian drivers whose current International Driver’s Licenses (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) have occasionally been denied in certain foreign jurisdictions.
Under the new policy, the DVLA will implement biometric international driver’s licenses and biometric international vehicle permits, which are both in compliance with ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) standards and have sophisticated security features.

The Authority claims that the new documents will have a bio-data page that is comparable to those found in contemporary passports, guaranteeing validity, ease of verification, and defence against forgeries.
According to DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey, “this strategic upgrade represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s transport modernisation agenda.”
It will strengthen Ghana’s adherence to international norms by giving drivers and car owners internationally recognised documentation,” he said.
All DVLA offices around the country are expected to start using the new biometric documents in 2026.
According to the Authority, Ghanaians who live and work outside will especially benefit from the program since it will make it easier for their driving credentials to be recognised internationally.
The action is a part of the DVLA’s larger goal to digitise, secure, and internationalise Ghana’s vehicle licensing system so that Ghanaian drivers can travel across the world with complete convenience and credibility.
