Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has ruled out resigning from his position following Ghana’s disappointing 2-4 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Tuesday.
The Portuguese coach admitted that the result was disappointing but said he does not believe stepping down would automatically solve the challenges facing the Ghana national football team.
Queiroz, however, stated that he would be prepared to resign if his departure would genuinely help improve the fortunes of the Black Stars.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, the experienced coach said resigning would be the easiest response after such a disappointing result.
“When we have a result like this, the option to resign is the easiest solution. If you believe that with the coach resigning you can change the situation of football in Ghana, I will be the first one to resign,” he said.
Queiroz Says Defeat Does Not Make Him a Failure
Despite the heavy defeat, Queiroz rejected suggestions that the result had damaged his reputation or credentials as an international football coach.
The Black Stars coach pointed to his long career in international football and said setbacks are part of the game.
“I am the coach in football with the most wins. And this defeat doesn’t make me a loser. This defeat makes me more alert to the lessons we take from the games and what we have to do in the future, with me or without me,” he said.
Queiroz added that his approach to football has always been centred on learning from difficult moments rather than dwelling on defeat.
“In my life, I have always had one very simple approach in football. Some coaches admit they lose. I never admit that I lose. I had a result that was not positive. But for me, you win or you learn,” he said.
Black Stars Must Improve Ahead of Next Games
The 73-year-old Portuguese trainer said the defeat against The Gambia should serve as a learning opportunity for the Black Stars as they prepare for their upcoming international assignments.
According to Queiroz, Ghana must improve its organisation, preparation and performance in subsequent matches.
“We cannot say it is a step back. What we can do is to be better prepared, better organised for the next games and win the next games. This is what we have to get done,” he added.
His comments come at a difficult period for the Ghana national team, with the Black Stars facing growing scrutiny over their recent competitive results.
Ghana’s Winless Run Reaches Eight Games
Queiroz also highlighted that Ghana’s current difficulties did not begin with Tuesday’s defeat.
The coach noted that the Black Stars have now gone eight competitive matches without a victory, suggesting that the challenges facing the national team require a broader review.
“For the Ghana national team, this is game number eight on the road that Ghana did not win. For the qualifiers, it is game number eight. So, this issue didn’t start today, it didn’t start yesterday,” he said.
He added that Ghana must examine the wider issues contributing to the team’s poor run rather than focusing only on the latest result.
“We have eight games since the last time Ghana won a game, so we have to start to think about that. It is not only something that happened here today. There are a lot of things that need to be reviewed.”
Pressure Mounts on Black Stars Coach
The 2-4 loss to The Gambia has increased pressure on Carlos Queiroz as he continues his efforts to rebuild the Black Stars.
The defeat also adds to concerns surrounding Ghana’s recent performances following the team’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
