While investigations into an undisclosed problem continue, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is reportedly ill but has pledged to work closely with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In an interview with Asaase Radio, his attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, disclosed that Wontumi was unable to accept a planned invitation from the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) due to his present physical condition.

“Because of the arrest, we couldn’t honour the CID invitation. I will call the CID headquarters to inform them about my client’s health condition and seek an adjourned date until his condition improves,” Appiah-Kubi explained.

The attorney insisted that the team is working with investigators in spite of the setback.

He added, “We will be going back to them tomorrow to complete investigations.”

“They are still investigating, and at the appropriate time, when he is put before court, we will also prepare as well,” he said.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, Wontumi was freed from EOCO custody, where he had been detained in connection with an ongoing investigation. The investigation’s specifics are still unknown.

In the meantime, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has made a forceful statement, calling on the government to stop what he calls “intimidation” and instead bring legal action against those he claims are to blame for the state’s financial losses.

“If they know they have a case, they should take our people to court and stop the intimidation,” Kodua said in a statement following Wontumi’s release.

They ought to be in court so we can demonstrate to them that we have the attorneys necessary to present any kind of defense. Get Wontumi in court if they claim he has committed a crime.

Kodua went on to say that the present measures against party members were politically driven and without legal support.

“The intimidation and persecution is a clear indication that they have nothing to prosecute according to the law,” he said.
