The ECG Power Queens from the Ashanti South and Ashanti Sub-Transmission Regions have donated medical supplies and essential healthcare items worth GH¢35,000 to the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
The donation, made with support from the regional management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), is aimed at improving the quality of care available to children undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital.
The items include medicines and critical blood transfusion equipment, which will help strengthen the unit’s capacity to care for children receiving paediatric oncology services.
ECG Power Queens Support Children Receiving Cancer Treatment
The intervention followed an earlier visit by members of the ECG Power Queens to the Paediatric Oncology Unit at KATH.
During the visit, the association assessed the facility’s immediate needs and identified shortages affecting the delivery of healthcare services.
The team discovered that the unit had only one transfusion device serving the entire facility, prompting the Power Queens to prioritise the acquisition of additional equipment.
The association subsequently provided more transfusion equipment, medicines and other essential medical supplies to support paediatric cancer care in Ghana.
KATH Appeals for More Support
Paediatric Oncologist at KATH, Dr Yvonne Addo, expressed appreciation to the ECG Power Queens and the regional management of ECG for the donation.
She appealed to individuals, private organisations, corporate institutions and other stakeholders to continue supporting the Paediatric Oncology Unit.
According to her, sustained assistance is important to help the hospital meet the healthcare needs of children undergoing cancer treatment.
Dr Addo also called for additional financial support to help reduce the economic burden on families of children receiving cancer care, as treatment can place significant financial pressure on households.
Donation Marks ECG Power Queens Anniversary
The donation forms part of activities marking the 38th anniversary of the ECG Power Queens.
The initiative highlights the association’s commitment to community support, social responsibility and healthcare development.
Through the donation, the ECG Power Queens have contributed to efforts to improve access to essential medical equipment and supplies for children receiving specialised treatment at one of Ghana’s major teaching hospitals.
Additional Support for Children at Adum ECG Facility
In a related community initiative, the Ashanti United Power Queens and executives of the Ghana Standards Institute (GSI) also donated a range of items to the children’s bay at the Adum ECG facility.
The donated items included mattresses, beds, a vacuum cleaner, kettle, plastic tables and chairs, woollen carpets and mats.
The items are expected to improve the comfort and general environment for children who use the facility.
Strengthening Healthcare and Community Support in Ghana
The combined initiatives demonstrate the role that corporate associations and community groups can play in supporting healthcare delivery in Ghana.
