Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku has started engagements with traditional authorities as part of efforts to deepen collaboration and accelerate Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The Minister paid a courtesy visit to the Ga Mantse, Nii Teiko Tsuru II, where discussions focused on strengthening the role of traditional leaders in agricultural development and improving communication between the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and farming communities.
The Ga Mantse welcomed the engagement and called for stronger cooperation to ensure that agricultural policies, government programmes and farming information effectively reach communities across the country.
He also encouraged the Ministry to increase its focus on maize production, highlighting the crop’s importance to the food requirements of the Ga people. He assured Eric Opoku of the continued support of the Ga State for initiatives aimed at improving agriculture.
During the meeting, Eric Opoku outlined the Ministry’s vision of transforming agriculture into a profitable and attractive business capable of creating opportunities for young people and encouraging more youth participation in farming.
The Minister highlighted the Feed Ghana Programme, noting that maize production reached more than 4.6 million tonnes in 2025, compared with estimated national demand of approximately 3.6 million tonnes.
The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s broader stakeholder consultations with Traditional Authorities and farming communities as the government seeks to increase agricultural productivity, attract investment, create jobs and strengthen Ghana’s food security.
The Ministry is also seeking to build stronger partnerships with traditional leaders to support the implementation of agricultural programmes and ensure that government interventions have a greater impact at the community level.
