In a passionate appeal to the Ghanaian people, former president John Dramani Mahama implores them to uphold the law and to shun any thoughts of aiding a potential coup d’état in the nation.

This call is a tactical response to remarks made by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, national chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress, who claimed that Ghana is on the verge of a coup d’état as a result of a public altercation.

The NDC Chairman recently told Joy News that while a coup d’état is more than possible in Ghana, Ghanaians’ tolerance is the only thing keeping the country from falling into chaos.

If you look at our history, you will realize that the circumstances leading to prior coup d’états in this nation were even less dire than what is occurring right now.

But only our shared history and tolerance are keeping us alive.

Mr. Nketiah argued that the main thing keeping Ghana from degenerating into total anarchy is the unusual tolerance of its people.

He continued by saying that although there might be circumstances that people don’t like and they might be tempted to think of doing something disruptive, such acts would only provide short-term respite and might result in new leaders who are similarly stubborn.

He underlined the value of Ghanaians learning their country’s history, particularly its turbulent past characterized by several coups that were caused by less important events.

Speaking to an audience at the 3rd National Conference of Imams and Regional Imams of Ghana in Kumasi, Mr. Mahama emphasized that, despite the nation’s current economic difficulties, the idea of staging a coup should not even be considered as a last resort.

“We should be aware that regardless of the hardships, there will be an opportunity for elections where different individuals can be elected.

We are only a year away from bidding farewell to some leaders and welcoming others who may have solutions to the economic challenges. Therefore, let us continue to respect the Constitution.

We must never entertain thoughts of coups, as adhering to democratic processes is the path to resolving our issues,” Mahama emphasized.
