The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, had a courtesy call at her office by a group from the University of Ghana’s Institute of African Studies, headed by Professor Samuel Aniegye Ntewusu.

The purpose of the visit was to congratulate her on her appointment as Minister and to honor her exceptional performance while attending the Institute.

Possible areas of cooperation between the Ministry and the Institute were also discussed at the discussion.

The Ministry’s utilization of the Institute’s research to guide policy and promote evidence-based decision-making was the main topic of discussion.

Among the main themes were activism, inclusivity, climate change, and gender equality, especially in view of the continuing curriculum changes in STEM education.

Concerns about streetism’s connection to social vices were voiced by the delegation.

The Minister’s profound knowledge of social issues and policy frameworks, according to Professor Ntewusu, puts her in a unique position to lead the Ministry in coordinating the country’s development agenda with inclusive protection for vulnerable groups, such as children and people with disabilities.

During her speech, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey expressed gratitude to the Institute for the visit as well as for the lessons and values she had learned throughout her academic career.

“I am not just a product of the system but a proud one. I remain focused on working with you to ensure the rights of all Ghanaians, especially the vulnerable, are fully protected, as espoused by H.E. the President,” she said.

The Minister also gave the group her word that she would work to improve the Ministry’s influence by fortifying ties with the Institute, especially in the field of research.

In order to fully address the problem of street crime, the Ministry intends to take a cross-sectoral, interministerial strategy, as Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey reiterated.

A lot of focus was also placed on resolving conflict and violence against women and girls, with domestic and sexual abuse being identified as major issues.

The Minister and the team also discussed expanding access to reasonably priced land for homes and farming in order to provide more women economic power.

With a firm commitment to strengthening cooperation, both sides concluded the visit on a positive note.
