Ghana’s interior minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has emphasised the value of investing in catastrophe risk reduction initiatives and fostering resilience.
Speaking during the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) celebration in Accra, the Minister emphasised the necessity of managing disasters proactively as opposed to reactively.
The Minister emphasised that investment in resilience is essential for sustainable development under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.” Any money spent on preparation and prevention saves a lot more than what would have been lost to disaster response and recovery.

Through programs like the Ghana Urban Resilience and Integrated Development (GARID) Project and the flood mitigation projects of the Ghana Hydrological Authority, Hon. Muntaka pointed out that Ghana has achieved great strides in disaster risk management and resilience-building.
However, the Minister emphasised that more work must be done, including promoting public-private partnerships that use innovation and investment to reduce risk, increasing domestic financing for resilience initiatives, and better integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into local governance systems.
Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, the National Disaster Management Organization’s (NADMO) acting director-general, underlined the organization’s dedication to saving lives and modernising emergency response throughout the nation.
As the government attempts to change how NADMO operates, he urged all residents to support the organisation.
