Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis have signed an additional bilateral labour agreement aimed at improving the working conditions and employment benefits of Ghanaian nurses recruited to work in the Caribbean country.
The agreement was signed in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley.
Under the new agreement, Ghanaian nurses working in Saint Kitts and Nevis will benefit from improved conditions of service, including enhanced salaries, health insurance coverage and rent allowances.
The bilateral labour deal also provides for end-of-service benefits and additional labour protections, strengthening the rights of Ghanaian healthcare professionals deployed to the Caribbean nation.
Improved Employment Conditions for Ghanaian Nurses
Mr Ablakwa described the agreement as an important development in the growing Ghana-Saint Kitts and Nevis bilateral relations, saying it would provide stronger protections for Ghanaian nurses working overseas.
He said Ghana remains committed to pursuing diplomatic engagements that deliver practical benefits for its citizens and create better opportunities for Ghanaian professionals abroad.
“Ghana will continue to pursue impactful diplomacy which benefits the people we serve,” Mr Ablakwa said in a Facebook post on Monday.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also praised Ghanaian professionals working internationally, noting that their skills and expertise continue to attract demand from countries around the world.
The agreement is expected to strengthen protections for Ghanaian nurses abroad while deepening cooperation between Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis in the areas of employment, healthcare and labour mobility.
