Over 65,000 civil personnel nationwide are scheduled to leave their jobs within the next 14 days.
According to Isaac Bampoe Addo, Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), the government has not implemented their new salary structure and updated conditions of service.
The government failed to implement a new compensation structure and conditions of service agreement that was reached with CLOGSAG last year, which is why the threat exists.
Five successive meetings with the Ministry of Labor have failed to deliver on the parties’ agreement that the implementation would start in January 2025.
Currently, more than 65,000 federal servants nationwide are experiencing increased tension.
“Now we have a situation even media people are calling us, asking CLOGSAG executives what are you doing about the MOU you signed with the government?’ When is it going to be implemented?”
”Let me repeat, we are not negotiating; we are only justifying why our conditions of service should be implemented,” he stressed.
CLOGSAG members will start their industrial action in two weeks, according to Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, who maintains that the government has run out of time.
This comes after 128,000 healthcare professionals withdrew from work last week due to a statewide strike by nurses and midwives.
The administration is still having trouble meeting their financial demands, even if the strike was only put on hold following parliamentary intervention.
However, CLOGSAG claims it is unaffected by the financial difficulties facing the government.
“There have not been any labour issues in the country where the government has ever had funds. in the budget you have emolument, and even if it is not in the budget, in the financial regulation we have what we call a supplementary budget,” he said.
In a parallel move, beginning Tuesday, June 17, 2025, CLOGSAG has instructed its 3,000 members at the Births and Deaths Registry to remain at home.
The instruction comes in response to allegations that Registrar Samuel Adom Botchway verbally abused employees.
“Here is the man threatening the staff that he is a lion; we all know what a lion looks like: victimising people. You see these politicians; they are worrying us. they must be where they belong. this is a civilized, structured civil service. we are telling the government that until that is removed, our people are staying at home,” he declared.
CLOGSAG is demanding immediate action and states that it will not put up with what it calls a hazardous workplace.
