The Cape Coast Castle, a former slave trading castle that was crucial to the transatlantic slave trade, was visited by US Vice President Kamala Harris. For for than 400 years, the Portuguese-built castle served as a major slave trade center.
Harris was visibly moved as she walked into the dank dungeons where hundreds of enslaved Africans were housed before being transported to the Americas during her tour of the castle. She went on a tour of the castle and heard about its history with the Ghanaian Minister of Tourism and other authorities.
After the visit, Harris stressed the significance of acknowledging and confronting the traumatic history of the transatlantic slave trade in a press conference. She urged people all over the world to keep in mind the agonizing sacrifices made by our ancestors in the quest for independence and to make sure that the accounts of their efforts are shared.
“Today’s visit to the Cape Coast Castle was a deeply moving experience,” Harris said. “It reminds us to confront the dark history of slavery and the atrocities committed against Black people in order to build a more just and fair future for all.”
Being the first Black and South Asian American woman to hold this position, Vice President Harris has made no secret of her desire to tackle issues of social justice and racial inequity. As part of her first official tour to Africa as vice president, she stopped by the Cape Coast Palace.
