The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi has announced revised reopening dates for the 2026/2027 academic year following the ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

Under the new academic calendar, fresh students are expected to report to campus on Thursday, October 15, 2026, while continuing students will resume on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Lectures are scheduled to commence on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The revised KNUST reopening schedule was communicated in an official notice issued by the Office of the Registrar on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after an emergency meeting of the university’s Executive Committee.

The notice, signed by E. T. Otieku, Deputy Registrar in charge of General Administration, on behalf of the Registrar, urged students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders to take note of the updated academic calendar and make the necessary preparations for the new semester.

KNUST Postpones Reopening Due to GAUA Strike

KNUST had initially scheduled the reopening of the 2026/2027 academic year for Tuesday, October 13, 2026. However, the university postponed the date indefinitely because of the ongoing GAUA strike and its impact on the effective administration and operations of the institution.

In a press release issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, the university explained that the industrial action had created operational challenges, making it necessary to suspend the reopening arrangements until further notice.

The latest announcement provides students with new reporting dates and a confirmed start date for lectures, allowing fresh and continuing students to plan their return to campus.

University of Ghana Also Postpones Reopening

The industrial action has also affected other public universities in Ghana. The University of Ghana reportedly postponed its reopening, which was originally scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, according to a report by GBC.

GAUA declared the strike on August 10, 2026, as part of its industrial action, which has disrupted administrative activities within the country’s public university system.

Students are advised to follow official university announcements for further updates regarding registration, accommodation, orientation and other academic activities ahead of the 2026/2027 academic year.
