President John Dramani Mahama has intensified Ghana’s efforts to attract global investment and build strategic partnerships with leading international companies following high-level discussions with senior executives of Amazon on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting forms part of President Mahama’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s relationship with major American corporations by focusing on investment, technology, skills development, private-sector growth and job creation, rather than relying primarily on traditional development assistance.

The engagement comes as Ghana seeks to deepen its economic ties with the United States and position the country as an attractive destination for international investors.

At a separate U.S.–Ghana Presidential Roundtable, President Mahama called for a new phase of Ghana-US relations centred on trade, investment, technology and strategic business partnerships.

Amazon Highlights Ghana’s Potential in Africa

Following his meeting with President Mahama, David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, described the engagement as productive.

Zapolsky also highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s plans to expand broadband connectivity across Africa. His responsibilities at Amazon include overseeing the company’s legal, policy, compliance and regulatory affairs.

The discussions with Amazon underline the growing importance of Ghana’s economic diplomacy as the government seeks to use high-level international engagements to attract foreign direct investment, advanced technology, expertise and access to global markets.

Broadband Connectivity Could Boost Ghana’s Digital Economy

The potential partnership with Amazon could have implications beyond improving internet connectivity.

Expanded access to high-speed broadband, particularly in rural and underserved communities, could support several areas of Ghana’s development, including digital education, healthcare, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship and e-commerce.

Better internet infrastructure could also create more opportunities for young Ghanaians to participate in the global digital economy through remote work, digital businesses, technology services and online entrepreneurship.

Improved broadband access is therefore increasingly viewed as an important component of Ghana’s digital transformation and economic development agenda.

Ghana Seeks to Become West Africa’s Technology Hub

The engagement with Amazon also aligns with Ghana’s ambition to establish itself as a competitive technology and digital business hub in West Africa.

With the country hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat, Ghana is seeking to leverage its strategic position to attract multinational companies looking for access to the wider African market.

Stronger partnerships with global technology companies could help Ghana expand its digital infrastructure, develop local skills, encourage innovation and create new employment opportunities.

The government’s growing focus on technology investment, digital infrastructure and private-sector partnerships is expected to remain an important part of efforts to transform Ghana’s economy and strengthen its position in the global marketplace.
