President John Dramani Mahama has established a high-level committee of experts to develop a comprehensive strategy and implementation framework ahead of Ghana’s assumption of the African Union (AU) Chairmanship in January 2027.
The committee, chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, will formulate strategic proposals for President Mahama as he prepares to take on the leadership of the continental organisation.
Experts to Shape Ghana’s African Union Agenda
The committee brings together experienced diplomats, academics, public officials and specialists in African affairs. Their expertise is expected to help Ghana develop a clear and effective agenda for its 2027 AU Chairmanship.
Among the members are former United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Executive Secretary Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas and former African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson Ambassador Kwasi Quartey.
Other members include diplomats Ambassadors Chris Kpodo, Amma A. Twum-Amoah, William Awinador-Kanyirige, Khadija Iddrisu and Francis D. Kotia.
The committee also includes Dr Delese Mimi Darko, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Dr Edem Adzogenu, Dr Obodai Torto and Clarence Amoatey.
Ghana Prepares for 2027 AU Leadership
The committee’s primary responsibility is to develop a strategic document that will guide Ghana’s priorities and initiatives when President Mahama assumes the African Union Chairmanship.
The proposed strategy is expected to provide a roadmap for an impactful and transformative tenure, allowing Ghana to clearly define its objectives and respond to key challenges facing the African continent.
With Africa’s population estimated at about 1.5 billion people, the committee is expected to help identify priorities that address the continent’s major economic, social, political and development concerns.
