Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has been petitioned to be removed by President John Mahama.

Electoral Commission employee Joseph Blankson Adumadzie submitted the petition, which also calls for the removal of Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tetteh, the Deputy EC Chairs.

Mr. Adumadzie affirmed in a statement released on Monday, November 24, that the petition was filed in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which describes the process for dismissing heads of independent constitutional organizations.

He disclosed that the petition is based on 12 instances of claimed misconduct, even though he refused to give all the specifics as required by law.

These include accusations of egregious ineptitude, abuse of office, and cronyism. He claims that the three senior officials’ actions have damaged public trust in the EC and jeopardized the independence and integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.

Mr. Adumadzie emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of the Electoral Commission, which is crucial to guaranteeing a legitimate democratic system, and said that his actions are motivated only by the need to defend the Constitution and bolster accountable governance.

Additionally, he urged President Mahama to carry out his constitutional duty by forwarding the petition to the Chief Justice in compliance with Article 146 protocols in order to establish a prima facie case.
