Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, has laid out his plan to make the capital of Ghana a cleaner, safer, and livelier city by implementing sustainable sanitation practices, electric public transit, and increased urban lighting to support a thriving 24-hour economy.
Addressing a high-level roundtable discussion with the theme “Africa–UAE Urban Futures: Local Leadership in Action” at the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum, which took place at Expo City in Dubai from October 27 to 29, 2025, Mayor Allotey revealed his vision.
Among 150 mayors and hundreds of specialists from 350 cities across multiple continents, Mayor Allotey represented Ghana’s capital. He urged authorities throughout the continent to support locally driven solutions to Africa’s urban problems.

“Look inward for solutions to Africa’s problems,” he underlined.
According to him, effective leadership necessitated comprehending the problems that residents face on a daily basis and developing workable solutions that enhance their quality of life.
The Mayor outlined Accra’s top goals, stating that his government would prioritise the deployment of electric buses to modernise transportation, improved city lighting to ensure safety and economic activity at night, and sustainable waste management systems to keep the city clean.
He claims that the measures are in line with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s goal of creating a 24-hour economy that fosters inclusivity, productivity, and urban resilience.
