Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, and Hon. Bukare Mikpe, Minister of Transport, paid a visit to the survivors of the recent attack on Ghanaian tomato sellers in Burkina Faso on Monday, February 23rd.

The Ministers, joined by the Deputy Trade Minister and Ministry officials, visited the injured traders at the 37 Military Hospital, where they are now undergoing treatment.

The two survivors, a guy and a girl, were injured to differing degrees during the incident a few weeks ago and are still hospitalised.

The purpose of the visit was to commiserate with the victims, examine their condition, and encourage them as they recovered.

After speaking with the victims, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare told the media that the occurrence was regrettable and upsetting.

She emphasised that in order to lower the dangers traders encounter while flying abroad to buy the item, Ghana must increase local tomato production.

In an attempt to reduce reliance on imports and improve food security, she promised that the government will increase year-round tomato farming.

“It is our prayer and commitment that Ghana will be able to grow tomatoes throughout the year so that our traders will not have to take such risks beyond our borders,” she said.

The Trade Minister also praised the medical staff for their commitment and asked them to keep up their high standard of treatment in order to guarantee the victims’ full recovery.

Assuring the Ministers that the injured traders were responding to treatment and would continue to receive the best medical care, Brigadier General R. Naab, the hospital’s Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, welcomed the delegation and thanked them for their visit.
