The Honourable Emelia Arthur, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the Honourable Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transportation, conducted a working visit to the Jamestown Fishing Harbour in order to evaluate operations and pinpoint areas that needed immediate attention.

The inspection is a component of President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda, which aims to improve the standard of living for coastal fishing communities and revitalise important economic sectors.

The Honourable Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister for Transportation, Honourable Sampson Ahi, Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, and William Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Transportation, accompanied the Ministers.

Important traditional fishing leaders, such as Nii Abeo Kyerekwandah and Nii Englishi, interacted with the delegation and gave their perspectives on the difficulties faced by harbour fishermen.

The state of the harbor’s vital infrastructure, such as the breakwater, dredging needs, landing and market areas, and water supply issues impacting fishermen’s and fishmongers’ day-to-day operations, received special attention.

During the inspection, the Ministers visited a number of important harbour facilities, such as the cold storage facility, fish market, and fish processing center, to evaluate their current condition and investigate ways to fully utilise and rehabilitate them in order to increase efficiency in the fishing industry.

The visit, according to Honourable Emelia Arthur, is a component of larger government initiatives to improve landing site security, bolster fisheries infrastructure, and support long-term job possibilities for coastal communities.

She underlined that increasing the Jamestown Fishing Harbour’s operational effectiveness will greatly lower post-harvest losses, enhance fish handling and storage, and promote the growth of Ghana’s fishing sector as a whole.
