MLNR-PR UPDATES
In a major blow to the galamsey threat, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) stormed many illegal mining locations in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, demolishing equipment and burning improvised camps.
NAIMOS’ reaffirmed commitment to preventing widespread destruction of the country’s rivers, forests, and farmlands due to illicit mining activities includes this most recent operation.
An active illegal mining camp was found by officers during the task force’s initial visit to Old Abirem.
Following the discovery of three residents on the property and their subsequent detention for interrogation, the team proceeded to a different location a short distance away.

Four excavators with new indications of operation were discovered by the team.
Before destroying other mining items, such as two heavy-duty water pumps, fuel drums, and improvised shelters, the task team deactivated the machines by removing their control boards and monitors, ensuring they would never be used again.
In the Birim North District, the NAIMOS team proceeded to Kyenkyenku, where miners were observed operating dangerously near a public road. An excavator and two canisters of diesel were left behind as the miners fled into the jungle upon seeing the task group.
A suspected illegal mining zone in the Ayensuano District’s Oboho Forest Reserve was also visited by the task group.
Although the location was empty when the team got there, four excavators were discovered parked in neighbouring villages, which raised questions about possible foreign involvement in the illegal activity.
The NAIMOS patrol discovered mining pits carved into cocoa fields in Old Abirem, which is yet another unsettling finding.
The Secretariat claims that these concerted efforts are a part of a larger effort to recover Ghana’s natural resources from illicit miners, particularly those who are harming streams and forest reserves.
