Ken Ofori-Atta, the former minister of finance, is scheduled to appear in court in the United States on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, for alleged immigration offences.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Mr. Ofori-Atta has lost his eligibility to remain in the country after overstaying his guest visa. The judicial processes may lead to a decision about a potential extradition to Ghana.

However, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s visa was officially revoked by U.S. officials, according to Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine, who has refuted suggestions that the case represents a typical overstay.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Dr. Ayine clarified that Mr. Ofori-Atta was initially given permission by U.S. officials to depart the country until November 29, 2025, but he did not do so.

He emphasised that the revocation of the visa was intentional, connected to current investigations, and not a typical immigration issue.

“This is not exactly about immigration. His visa has not expired. It expires in February. No, it was revoked. I am telling you this on authority,” Dr. Ayine stated.

The Attorney-General claims that Ghana’s request for extradition is related to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s investigation into the SML case.

He continued, “I have been working with the Americans diligently on him. And the visa was revoked. And that is why he lost his immigration status in the United States.”

On January 21, 2026, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, the former CEO of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, is scheduled to appear before a U.S. court to discuss her potential extradition to Ghana.
