Paul Afoko, the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally announced his plan to run for the National Chairmanship of the party in the next national officers’ election.

Mr. Afoko said in a statement titled “Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of the New Patriotic Party” that he made the decision after giving it careful thought and receiving support from stakeholders and party members who want the NPP to have fresh leadership.

“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers,” he stated.

He clarified that he made his choice because he wanted to bring the NPP back to its democratic foundations.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our Party,” he stated.

Despite previous setbacks, Mr. Afoko reiterated his commitment to the NPP and stated that his major goal is still to rebuild and fortify the party.

“While the journey has not been without its trials, I have always chosen to prioritise the unity and progress of the NPP above all else. My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future, one where our Party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”

He went on to say that he will discuss his vision and leadership plans with party members and the media in the upcoming weeks.

“In the coming weeks, I will engage more broadly with Party faithful and the media to share my vision, ideas, and plans to lead the NPP with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose. Let us look ahead together.”

Background

The NPP’s National Executive Committee decided to suspend Paul Afoko as its National Chairman in 2015 after an emergency meeting at the party’s Accra headquarters.

The suspension came after the Council of Elders, in a seven-page petition, demanded disciplinary action against him, and the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee recommended it.

Before the 2016 general elections, several party members accused Mr. Afoko of conspiring to undermine the chances of Nana Akufo-Addo, who was the flagbearer at the time.

Before his suspension was recommended, he allegedly ignored many invitations from the Disciplinary Committee.
