Here we come, Ghana!
With a spirited 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night in Accra, Ghana secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing their sixth appearance on the largest platform in football.
Although it wasn’t a classic performance by Otto Addo’s team, it was one that was based on discipline, control, and an essential dash of excellence when it counted most.
There was limited entertainment value in the first half as neither team was able to generate many clear opportunities.
Comoros, who had defeated Ghana in the rematch, got out to a strong start and nearly scored in the first few minutes when goalie Benjamin Asare misplayed a cross, but was saved when the header that resulted went wide.
Ghana was cautious but calm because they only needed one point to qualify.
Jordan Ayew’s brilliant solo run, which saw him beat three defenders before dinking a cross into the box, was their best moment. However, no Ghanaian shirt was available to complete the play.
The game was still goalless at the half, but victories elsewhere gave consolation, as Mali defeated Madagascar 2-0 to guarantee Ghana’s top spot in Group I.
Pushing higher and committing more men forward, the Black Stars came out of the break with a newfound sense of purpose.
Their goal was nearly instantly successful. Thomas Partey was inside the box when Mohammed Salisu’s tease cross from the left was whipped in only two minutes into the second half.
With poise, the midfielder set up Mohammed Kudus, who tapped the ball into an empty net to give Ghana the crucial lead.
Ghana skilfully controlled the game after that, holding onto the ball and giving Comoros just half-chances.
Salisu and Djiku commanded the defence, which held firm as Addo’s team maintained their shape and slowed the pace when necessary.
Inside the Accra Sports Stadium, there were emotions of relief and celebration when the final whistle rang.
Even if the 1-0 victory wasn’t very decisive, it was sufficient to guarantee Ghana’s spot in the 2026 World Cup and carry on their illustrious history on the international scene.
With this most recent accomplishment, Otto Addo has become the first coach to qualify the Black Stars for two FIFA World Cups, cementing his place in Ghanaian football history.
