His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the president of the Republic of Ghana, spoke at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women today, Monday, October 13, 2025.
The President emphasised the significance of the gathering and said it underlines the common promises made for women’s and girls’ empowerment at the Beijing Conference thirty years ago.
Ghana has taken strong action to mainstream gender and has committed to staying committed, he said.
He expressed hope that with sustained support, women may break through the glass ceiling and rise to become the nation’s leaders, pointing to the election of Ghana’s first female vice president and the appointment of other women to important roles.
Ghana has achieved gender parity in school enrolment, he continued, and the government has pledged its commitment to sustainability by fortifying key agencies and allocating funds to support the efficient operation of social intervention programs.
He cited a number of initiatives, including the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty program, which focusses on households led by women.
Additionally, in line with the African Union’s designation of 2020–2030 as the Decade of African Women’s Financial and Economic Inclusion, he declared that attempts were being made to establish a women’s development bank.
He emphasised the importance of highlighting the progress made in women’s empowerment while establishing systems to close current disparities.
In his final remarks, he urged his colleagues to commit to transformative measures and concentrate on women’s empowerment for sustainable development in his role as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues.
