President John Dramani Mahama is expected to leave Accra on Monday, March 23, 2026, for New York City, where he will attend the United Nations General Assembly and deliver a big talk on slavery commemoration and reparation.
Ghana’s participation in events commemorating the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade includes the travel.
The goal of the tour, according to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is to advance international conversations about reparatory justice.
President Mahama “will convene and deliver the keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations Headquarters,” with the theme “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” according to a statement.
The occasion “will bring together world leaders and high-level dignitaries to address this critical matter of historical injustice,” he continued.
On Wednesday, President Mahama is also scheduled to speak to the UN General Assembly, where he will outline Ghana’s stance on a historic resolution that has been approved by the African Union.
“The trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans is the gravest crime against humanity,” according to the resolution.
The President’s program includes a wreath-laying ceremony honouring Africans who were enslaved at the African Burial Ground National Monument.
In addition to his UN appearances, he will visit Pennsylvania to speak with the Ghanaian community at Temple University and give a keynote speech at Lincoln University.
