While on the cross, the Christian Bible records that Jesus spoke seven final statements. The third saying, recorded in John 19:26–27, expresses the Lord’s care and concern for His mother: “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” The unnamed disciple whom Jesus’ addressed was apostle John.
This short narration speaks to how we must care for our mothers.
Hence the commemoration of Mothers’ Day all over the world, is in order and it is important we all do well to appreciate them not only today, but always. For, John tok his mother into his home and cared for her after Christ passed.
Generally, even though motherhood goes beyond giving birth, ideally, biological procreation is expected to take place before motherhood commences. We however know that, not all are, or can be biological mothers. Some are simply barren and have done all they could to make babies but have been unsuccessful. Some actually died while giving birth and others have been plagued with perpetual state of depression and mental ailments, simply because they went to give birth. Some have had children who have been so physically or mentally challenged or so wayward that, they are now a curse on their mothers, causing deep pain and severe agony. Some also gave birth but have had to bury all their children.
So, if you are a mother today, and you never experienced any of the challenges above, then on this day of commemoration, you must give thanks and show a deep sense of appreciation to God for making you a mother. Unfortunately, mother-child relations have been destroyed on Mothers’ Day over the years because, rather than giving thanks to God first, Mothers were overly expecting or demanding that gifts be showered on them from their children and were disappointed. But this is a show of ingratitude to God, which would always bring such disappointments from children to their Mothers and possibly strain relations.
On Mothers’ Day, mothers must must not make the gifts and appreciations from their children their focus. First things first. Mothers must first give thanks to God for making them mothers and for not experiencing the challenges others have had, on their journeys towards motherhood. Most assuredly, it is this show of gratitude to God first, that moves the Hand of God to touch the hearts of children to appreciate their mothers on Mothers’ Day.
Therefore, let mothers show appreciation to God first for making them mothers and all will follow. A special shout out to Fathers who have, for whatever reasons taken the place of mothers and are providing motherhood care to their children.
