R&B artist Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has talked about the difficulties she had in her early career, including being jeered off stage during a school function.

The Crazy Tings singer revealed that in addition to being jeered, she was also harassed with plastic bottles in an interview with Big Boy TV.

When I was a young vocalist, I recall thinking I would get a standing ovation when I performed at my school.

“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she remembered.

Tems clarified that she was still committed to pursuing a career in music in spite of the humiliating event and several such rejections.

She acknowledged that some of the early rejections she experienced might have resulted from her determination to remain true to her own style rather than performing covers or well-known tunes like the majority of her colleagues.

Looking back, the Grammy-winning singer expressed her gratitude for maintaining her uniqueness in spite of early pressure.
