Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has questioned the veracity of the accusations that resulted in Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo’s dismissal, stating that they were not significant enough to support President John Dramani Mahama’s extreme measure.

Madam Akuffo, a member of the Council of State as well, was unreserved in her criticism of the proceedings that led to the dismissal of the Chief Justice.

She called it a “rigmarole,” emphasizing that no judge, and most definitely not the head of the judiciary, deserved such treatment.

“The [allegations] lack the gravity that will lead to a grave outcome such as the removal of the head of an institution of justice,” she said in an interview with TV3 that has not yet been broadcast on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

On Monday, September 1, 2025, President Mahama took action under Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, formally removing Justice Torkornoo from office.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the ruling was made in response to the suggestion of a committee that was set up under Article 146(6) to look into a petition that citizen Daniel Ofori had filed.

The removal was effective right away.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, signed the statement, which emphasized that the President was required by the Constitution to carry out the committee’s recommendations.
