The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ decision to look into the attempt to sell Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s official residence has been appreciated by Parliament.
Parliament hopes the investigation will identify people connected to the purported deal.
Parliament is ready for the probe, according to a statement from David Sebastian Damoah, Director of the Media Relations Department.
“The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources’ decision to look into this matter is encouraging, and we hope the investigation will identify the person who tried to sell and the potential buyer.”
The statement stated that “public confidence in state institutions depends on transparency in this matter.”
The clarification came about as a result of conflicting media stories regarding the Speaker’s alleged selling of his official house. The reports were based on statements made on Monday during the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum by Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
But Damoah made clear that the Speaker only disclosed that the property was on the verge of being sold, not that the deal had really occurred. The prospective buyer learned about the property’s unresolved status after starting due diligence at the Lands Commission.
“The Speaker refrained from mentioning that the Speaker had sold their official residence. Damoah emphasized, “What he stated was that it was almost sold.
“A visit to the official residence of Rt. Hon. Speaker will unveil that almost all the surrounding buildings and accompanying parcels of land have been sold out to private developers, endangering the safety and security of the Rt. Hon. Speaker,” Damoah said, drawing attention to the precarious situation surrounding the Speaker’s residence.
The statement also made reference to a comparable event that occurred in 2019 when a private developer in Cantonments purchased the official residence of a serving clerk of parliament.
